Ever wondered why the Irish have made such an influence on the world? How did such a small country make such a big impact on the world? Over the centuries more than 10 million people emigrated from Ireland – at EPIC you can find out why they left, where they went and how they shaped the world.
The museum was founded on the belief that emigration is one of the most interesting ways to fully understand a country. As you uncover the stories of our emigrants, you’ll realise that emigration is not about what people leave behind, but what they bring with them.

Stop 1: Kilkenny City
Kilkenny City offers a wonderful opportunity to catch a glimpse of Ireland's medieval past, it is also considered to be one of the cultural and craft centres on the island. We will go on a guided walking tour of the city including wondering through the narrow winding cobbled stone streets (think Harry Porter, diagon alley) along with being told stories of the cities history. Tour will take us to Kilkenny Castle and its grounds which are open to the public, these extensive castle grounds are behind a 1000 year old fortified granite walls.
We will have personal time to explore the city after the walking tour. Anybody that wants to can then take a tour of the castle (ticket not included but can be bought on the day there). Or choose to wonder across from the castle to Butler House & Gardens, beautiful gardens and the castle stable yards where silversmith crafts men and women are at work, sculptures, painters, tanners and potterers. The workshops are open to the public or visit the haunted Black Church and Rothe House filled with Viking artifacts.
Lunch in any one of the great pubs or artisan cafes along our way after the walking tour.
Afternoon: Wicklow Mountains & Glendalough - Nature's Embrace along with Ancient Lore
Wicklow is know as the "Garden of Ireland"

Stop 2: Sheep Farm & Collie Demonstration (45 minutes): Following the Kilkenny tour, we will stop at a working Irish sheep farm set in the Wicklow Mountains foothills. Witness border collies corral sheep across the fields in a demonstration, then chat with the farmer and mingle with sheep and dogs (I know we have a lot of dog lovers). The setting is magical, located in a beautiful Wicklow valley.
-
Stop 3: Wicklow Gap - Photo Stop (10 minutes): Afterward, we head over the wild and rugged Wicklow Gap, one of the highest Irish mountain passes and a film location for movies like Braveheart and PS I Love You, and the TV series Vikings. Enjoy a short photo stop and some spectacular views of the Wicklow Mountains National Park, gazing down through the centuries-old passageway linking east and west Wicklow. It's the one place in Ireland that always has snow in winter.
-
Stop 4: Glendalough Monastic Settlement (2 hours): Glendalough is one of Aoife's favourite places in Ireland
Retrace the footsteps of Celtic clans and St. Kevin as you dip down into the glacial valley of Glendalough, "the valley of the two lakes."-
